Berlin (dpa) – The international shortage of microchips means German carmaker BMW will temporarily stop production at its facility in the southern German city of Regensburg, according to a company spokesperson on Sunday.
The plan is to shut down production for one week, starting on Monday. A week of vacation had already been set for the subsequent week, meaning production would not resume until August 9.
Chip shortages are being felt in the car industry worldwide, due to a combination of factors including increased demand for computer products amid pandemic lockdowns and fallout from a trade war between the US and China.
