Real Avilés earned a highly valuable win against a very dangerous Athletic side, a team full of young players with a promising future. What makes the victory even more significant is that Avilés came back twice from behind against a rival that had conceded only one goal all season.
A demanding first half
From my point of view, it was a pleasure to watch the Basque team compete. They didn’t give up a single ball, fought intensely and showed an outstanding sense of anticipation, along with a creativity that deserves real appreciation. Many players in that squad have remarkable quality, which only highlights the merit of Avilés’ win.
Things became complicated early on. Both teams started with the intention of winning, and during the first half, Athletic not only took the lead but also looked determined to score again.
The 0–1 came from a perfect high cross by Buján, allowing the ever-dangerous Ibai Sanz to finish and open the scoring.
Later, Ibai scored another brilliant goal after a clever run and a powerful shot into the top corner, but it was annulled by the VAR. After checking the monitor, the referee ruled it out. Even so, their level of play made it clear that the young lions were a real threat.
Goalkeeper Álvaro deserves special mention. He prevented two clear goals with excellent saves, showing once again that he is a top-level keeper. Thanks to him, Avilés reached half-time only one goal down.
Reaction, support and a decisive finish
In the second half, the game became more balanced. Athletic displayed the traits of players who know exactly what it takes to succeed, and that’s why they are admired everywhere.
The equaliser arrived from a corner: Kevin Bautista scored with a header after Babín redirected the ball, also with a header.
The stands erupted in relief and joy.
The 2–1 came from Javi Cueto, who struck a superb shot from outside the box. Cueto and Santamaría are a dangerous partnership, as they proved last season, and Isi adds a valuable extra dimension to the team. With that goal, Avilés took the lead.
A special mention must go to the Galiana supporters, who never stopped cheering. Their voices and drumming kept the team alive when the score was against them. Their support deserves full recognition — a ten out of ten.
Athletic equalised again after an excellent pass from Nomayo, finished once more by Ibai Sanz.
But there was still more to come: Javi Cueto appeared again to score the 3–2 winner, sending the stadium into absolute celebration.
Last season’s promotion was achieved thanks to a strong squad, and many of those players continue to demonstrate their value. Julio, Natalio and Edu Cortina remain essential and reliable pieces for this team. All of them can continue to bring positive headlines to Real Avilés.
As a final note, it was remarkable to see a referee making extensive use of the video monitor in every decisive play and every goal. When used correctly, VAR can clarify many situations for the good of the game.
